This poor bull is Nandi. He’d been abandoned as a calf in the village of Kasegaon. With no caretaker, he had no way to feed himself other than to eat whatever he could find—including farmers’ crops, which made him quite unpopular. Villagers also claimed that he was violent. In fact, Nandi had become so hated by the villagers that they were planning to kill him! Fortunately, a government livestock officer found out about the plan and notified Animal Rahat.

When our vets arrived, they found Nandi tied to a wall with ropes that bound his head and legs, which were bruised and swollen, making it impossible for him even to lift his head. He had been beaten. The Animal Rahat team halted the villagers’ plan and said that they would take Nandi. They also got a written commitment from the village leader stating that the abandonment of bulls would be prohibited in the future.

Nandi was given immediate pain relief and neutered, and he now lives peacefully at our retired bullock home, where he’s no longer fearful of people and enjoys daily grooming sessions.
