During our humane-education workshops in local primary schools this month, students were engaged and enthusiastic. They especially enjoyed interacting with our elephant mascot. In response to the workshops, students took down Animal Rahat’s phone number to call in case of an animal emergency, and 125 students pledged never to eat meat—hurray! Many schools even set up watering stations for birds.

Because we are on call 24/7, we were fast to act when a call came in one morning at 7 a.m. from a homeowner who had found a snake in his bathroom. He wanted someone from Animal Rahat to come right away because family members were planning to kill the snake. We immediately dispatched a staffer, who arrived in minutes and removed what turned out to be a common wolf snake—so named for its enlarged front teeth. The wolf snake is a nonvenomous species that’s harmless to humans. Our staffer put the snake, who was surely even more frightened than the residents of the house, in a ventilated plastic jar and released the animal into a jungle area away from any houses.
