For years, I’ve been the person behind the computer screen at Animal Rahat, memorizing rescued animals’ faces from reports and photos to inspire global donors. But nothing compares to finally looking into the eyes of these wondrous beings whose lives are transformed daily by Animal Rahat.

Relief Warriors in Action

Animal Rahat (rahat means “relief” in Hindi) is on a mission to liberate India’s working animals—the bullocks, donkeys, and horses who collapse under crushing loads in scorching heat without water, rest, or medical care. These forgotten workers power brick kilns, sugar mills, and other cruel haulage trades, suffering as living engines and driving rural economies.

Animal Rahat partners with factory owners to introduce game-changing alternatives that benefit everyone involved—from retiring weary animals to its four sanctuary havens to providing free vaccines and preventative care for those still forced to work and upping the income of the impoverished owners who can barely afford to feed themselves let alone the animals they depend on.

And their emergency work reaches any animal who needs help, at any time of day or night.

Plastic Prison Break: A Roadside Miracle

In a rural Maharashtra district, I witnessed a rescue mission that will stay with me forever. Desperate for water, a village dog had thrust her head into a discarded plastic jug—and become trapped in the suffocating prison. Unable to see, hear, or even breathe properly in the stifling heat, she tucked under a vehicle as her life drained away.

The team quickly sedated her and punched breathing holes into the plastic before carefully freeing her head. I saw the ring of yellow and purple bruises around her neck, which told a heartbreaking tale of her struggle. Watching them cut the jug in half and crush every bit so no other animal would suffer the same way was cathartic.

She was still sleeping peacefully when they gently placed her in the back of the ambulance and hauled her away to the nearest field office for recovery, spay surgery, and vaccinations. After she recovered, they took her back to her area, and her pack greeted her with great joy

Face to Face with the Mission

I arrived at dawn to witness brick kilns that had been operating all night and into the morning, forcing donkeys to work against their natural rhythms. These massive operations—about 10 acres each with 30 donkeys—lined the river, providing brick-making materials and the donkeys’ only water source, available only after their long, gruelling shifts.

Most of these kilns had already been mechanized by Animal Rahat, except for one final holdout. The difference was striking: a mechanized operation’s owner proudly shared that his production had jumped from 0.8 to 2.5 million bricks per season, tripling his earnings and ensuring year-round income for his family.

I could barely stand the heat—yet these donkeys were expected to endure it endlessly.

If they didn’t keep moving, they got cracked on the backside with a stick. I also learned that they worked without food, water, or breaks, then scavenged garbage and drank polluted river water afterward. No wonder Animal Rahat frequently relieves their aching joints and painful colic.

Our visit ended with a breakthrough—Animal Rahat convinced the final holdout to mechanize! Those donkeys, once bound by endless toil, were taking their final steps away from suffering—toward an Animal Rahat sanctuary.

Paradise Found: Where Working Animals Retire in Style

At Animal Rahat’s Sangli sanctuary, I finally met the animals I’d admired through photos for years. When Hiren approached to munch on my welcome bouquet, I surrendered it gladly. After years of backbreaking labor, these arthritic sanctuary residents deserve every flower, every kindness, every peaceful day.

Some of the ponies, buffalo, bullocks, and cows came to greet us, but the rescued camels kept their distance—a choice I respected immediately. It was my privilege to visit their home, and they were never obligated to entertain me. All the sanctuary dogs came up for a pat or two, with Lucy and Sunil happily appointing themselves our tour guides.

The joy I felt for these souls was off the charts, and my cheeks still hurt from all the smiling this day—a small price to pay for witnessing these deserving animals finally living on their terms, free to choose comfort over labor, rest over burden, and peace over pain.

From Statistics to Soulmates

Back at my desk in the U.S., everything has changed. Statistics and strategies have transformed into faces I’ve touched, stories I’ve witnessed, and transformations I’ve celebrated. Each donation we ask for isn’t just a transaction—it’s a lifeline for a dog trapped in garbage, or freedom for donkeys staggering under brick loads.

If you’re discovering Animal Rahat today, picture a world where working animals aren’t invisible cogs in economic machines, but beings whose dignity and needs truly matter. That’s the world Animal Rahat is building—one rescued donkey, one mechanized kiln, one saved life at a time. Your support transforms these animals from forgotten laborers to cherished individuals. And having witnessed their journey firsthand, I can tell you: seeing their eyes shine with newfound freedom changes everything—for them, and for all of us privileged to help them thrive.
