Animal Rahat rescued many animals last month, including several who had fallen down wells.

Our team was called upon to rescue this exhausted, hungry puppy from a 25-foot-deep well. She had managed to crawl onto a rocky ledge, so one of our team members lowered himself down with a rope and was able to scoop her up and reunite her with her siblings and her mother, who immediately started nursing her.

Our team then spoke to the person who had called Animal Rahat about the puppy, along with neighbors in his apartment building, and asked them to put a fence around the well. The neighbors agreed that this was necessary and promised to take it up with the apartment owner. We’ll be following up to make sure it gets done.

The civet pictured below was trapped at the bottom of an abandoned well, which—unlike most of the wells that we deal with—was dry. Our team was able to catch her with a net, and once she was out of the well, she ran swiftly back to her family.

The good news is that our outreach campaign to get people to fence their village wells is building momentum. This month, we held a workshop with volunteer youth to start a well-fencing initiative—and with fantastic results: Ten villagers immediately started fencing their wells, and another 12 promised to do so in the coming weeks. We will, of course, keep pushing this issue in all the villages we serve, and we look forward to seeing these deathtraps fenced off for good.
