Making a Legacy Gift to Animal Rahat in Your Will

A will is an important and often straightforward way to distribute assets to those you love. It’s also a powerful way to help animals.

You can structure your will to make Animal Rahat the beneficiary of a specific financial amount, a piece of property, or a percentage of your residuary estate, which is what remains after all specific legacies and expenses have been accounted for.

Having a will in place will ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes. Failure to plan properly and express your wishes in a will or another estate document will result in a loss of control of your estate once you have passed, and your estate assets will be distributed in accordance with the law, regardless of your intentions. Through a properly tailored will or another estate plan, you can ensure that your loved ones are remembered and that your compassion continues to make a difference for animals long after you’re gone.

The following are the options for supporting the work of Animal Rahat that we ask potential bequest supporters to consider:

  • Leave a percentage of your estate. Your bequest will fluctuate with the size of your estate, taking inflation into account and ensuring that your gift never becomes disproportionate to other parts of your will.
  • Leave the residue of your estate. You can choose to leave Animal Rahat the balance—or a percentage of the balance—of your estate remaining after all your personal commitments have been met.
  • Leave a specific sum. You can specify the amount that you want to donate to Animal Rahat. As this does not take into consideration changes in your estate, you should review your will regularly.

Choosing the Right Words

If you decide to leave a legacy gift to Animal Rahat, it’s important that you use the correct wording in your will. Take special care to use the organization’s registered name: Animal Rahat.

Other details that may be useful include the registered address and the PAN number:

Animal Rahat, P.O. Box No. 30, Sangli, Maharashtra 416416

PAN number: AAECA8515B

The following is sample language that can be used to make Animal Rahat a beneficiary of your will. You can share this with your solicitor:

I leave Animal Rahat, P.O. Box No. 30, Sangli, Maharashtra 416416, [one of the following options].

“all [fraction (e.g., one-third) of] the residue of my estate”

“[fraction (e.g., one-third)] share of my estate”

“the sum of Rs [amount]”

[clearly described items, such as jewelry, artifacts, furniture, a car with its license plate number listed, or a piece of property with its address listed]

How to Make a Will

First, make a list of everything you own of value. The value of your house, your car, and other possessions could add up to a considerable amount.

Next, decide who you want to remember in your will and the amount or percentage of your estate you’d like to leave them. If you have animal companions, this is a great time to decide how they will be cared for if they should survive you. (Visit this PETA U.K. webpage for more information.)

Then, choose and appoint an executor to see that the instructions in your will are carried out correctly. It can be beneficial to choose and appoint a contingent executor in case your first executor is unable to serve.

Finally, we strongly recommended—although it isn’t required—that you consult a solicitor of your choice for assistance in drawing up your will. A will has to be in writing and signed by you in the presence of two witnesses. (Anyone over 18 is eligible to be a witness.) The witnesses must sign the will to attest to the fact that they observed as you signed it.

The original copy of the will can be kept with you or your solicitor—it’s recommended that your solicitor keep a copy. There are no legal formalities involved.

When to Make a Will

The sooner you make a will, the better—especially if you have loved ones or causes that you want to provide for.

Changing Your Will

You can make as many changes to your will as you want, as often as you want. Updates must be separate legal documents, which must be signed and witnessed in the correct legal manner.

You can also make a completely new will. If you have any life changes, such as a marriage or children, you certainly should consider creating a new will.

We would like to caution that you should not attempt to change a will by crossing parts out, adding words, or even attaching anything to it (except a codicil—please see below). Doing so could invalidate it.

If you want to change your will in order to leave a bequest to Animal Rahat by means of a codicil, the following wording can be considered:

This is [donor’s name] of [donor’s address]. I amend clause [number] of my previous will to leave Animal Rahat, P.O.

The document will have to be signed and witnessed in the same legal manner and attached to the will.
