Rocky, Rakhi, Raju, and Shiva—whose nose still bears the scars from a rope’s unforgiving grip—are safe at last.

It’s been said that the best journey is the one that takes you home, and four newly arrived residents can attest to its truth. At the Sangli sanctuary, old man Shiva—a bullock previously worked hard and tied so tightly that his nose rope left the deep scars you can make out in this photo—is learning to trust his patient new caregivers. And beautiful pony Rakhi came to the Ranapur sanctuary from PETA India’s work mechanizing Delhi’s working cart animals. Raju, a pony, and Rocky, a dog, were “circus animals,” forced to do confusing and uncomfortable tricks under threat of punishment in the New Momota Circus until a PETA India bust liberated them. to the Kolkata Sanctuary, where Rocky’s rescuer stayed by his side to help him adjust to his new life while Animal Rahat vets prepped for his neuter surgery (one of the 245 sterilizations we performed this month). The resident roster has grown to nearly 700 rescued animals at our four sanctuaries, and with your help, Animal Rahat will welcome more needy souls and give them a wonderful life.
