It’s hot and humid in Maharashtra, and the residents of Animal Rahat’s sanctuary all have their own ways of beating the heat.

Camels thrive in hot weather, so friends Tracy, Sameer, and Simran are content ambling leisurely around the grounds together, occasionally stopping for a snack break.

Three camels chew on leafy tree branches.

Camels Tracy, Sameer, and Simran—all rescued from circuses—have no problem with the hot temperatures as they happily munch on tree branches.

But not everyone was made for the heat! The horses, bullocks, and dogs are enjoying the protection of the sanctuary’s many shade canopies and water troughs.

Nine bullocks lie together in the shade of a canopy.

The resident bullocks relax in the shade—a welcome change from life before retirement when they were forced to work all day under the sun.

Kaliya, a brown-and-white horse, stands over a water trough that's being filled with fresh, clean water from a hose.

Retired horse Kaliya enjoys clean, fresh water—something he likely had little (if any) access to back when he was hauling cargo on busy city streets.

Rossy smiles wide as she lies on her bed, relishing the shade of her doghouse.

Rescued dog Rossy is grateful for the shady respite provided by her doghouse, complete with a big bowl of fresh water and a donated blanket for added comfort.

As everyone waits for the monsoon rains to fill the pond, the caregivers use hoses and sprinklers to help the residents cool off.

Mahesh closes his eyes as a sanctuary staffer gently sprays him with a hose.

Mahesh the water buffalo—who was abandoned as a calf by the dairy industry—keeps cool with the help of a friend.

Two sanctuary workers use a hose to bathe a horse.

Vijay, a horse retired from a life of hard labor on busy city streets, finds bath time extra refreshing this time of year.

In their lives before the sanctuary, the residents didn’t always have easy access to basics like shade, water, and food. But as you can see, Animal Rahat’s sanctuary provides all those necessities, plus lots of affection and other special touches that make it the comfortable and peaceful home all the animals deserve.
