Kalu, Lalu, and Mahesh are the resident water buffaloes at Animal Rahat’s sanctuary—and the best of friends!

Rescued water buffaloes make grooming a group activity as Lalu and Mahesh wait for Kalu to finish his turn.

After being separated from their mothers as calves so that humans could drink the milk made for them, these buffaloes would have been abandoned and left to die or sold for slaughter at only a few weeks old if compassionate people hadn’t intervened and taken them to Animal Rahat.

Just look at Mahesh, Lalu, and Kalu now—all grown up and enjoying being able to engage in natural behavior like splashing around in the sanctuary pond.
