Reports to: Team Leader/ Clinical Quality Assurance Manager (CQAM)/ Sr. Veterinary Trainer (Sr. VT)

Location: Respective headquarters of the district or other major towns within the district (Siyana, with regular travel to all operational areas within the district).

Purpose:

To acquire veterinary skills in large animal practice, especially working with bullocks, with an applied animal welfare perspective, to provide technical support to the Senior Veterinary Officers and Animal Welfare Assistants and help ensure the quality of mobile veterinary services, act as an expert on veterinary subjects and support the field staff during community awareness activities and to help achieve Animal Rahat’s vision of relieving the suffering of working animals.

This position requires 90% field time and 10 % office time

Primary Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Assist the Senior Veterinary Officer in day-to-day activities involving emergency services and follow-up cases.
  • Maintain and manage stock of medicines and instruments, and ensure biomedical waste management protocol.
  • Schedule field visits and attend clinical cases, record treatments, and enter them into a database.
  • Assist the Senior Veterinary Officer/ CQAM/ Sr VT in routine services provided by the emergency team and Animal Welfare Assistants (AWAs).
  • Assist in conducting daily and monthly monitoring procedures as recommended by the Team Leader.
  • Support the Senior Veterinary Officer in the regular sterilisation of surgical instruments and equipment in compliance with SOPs.
  • Help implement the work plan of the unit, through regular field visits and clinical audits.
  • Assist the Senior Veterinary Officer in training AWAs on applied animal welfare, standards of animal management and care, first aid and minor treatment services.
  • Assist the Senior Veterinary Officer in interacting with various stakeholders (animal owners, local traditional healers, farriers and veterinary service providers such as pharmacists, veterinarians etc) to improve their practices.
  • Assist the Senior Veterinary Officer and Animal Welfare Assistants in enhancing the skills of the local veterinary service providers.
  • Enhance the quality of major and minor treatment services available to animals through various local sources.
  • Help the team employ effective and efficient participatory tools to influence various factors that affect the welfare of animals.
  • Assist the Senior Veterinary Officer in developing and maintaining good public relations with partners, government offices, local bodies and other key stakeholders as required.
  • Act on behalf of the Senior Veterinary Officer on all day-to-day activities in his or her absence.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor.
