Most children have an inherent empathy for animals, but seeing working bullocks and donkeys being whipped and village dogs, cats, and cows being treated as unworthy and unfeeling can desensitize impressionable young people to cruelty. The Compassionate Citizen humane education workshops that Animal Rahat conducts help schoolchildren see every animal as a unique individual with thoughts, interests, and a desire to live free from suffering. Speakers share fascinating facts about animals’ abilities and aptitudes, videos of daring rescues, and hands-on lessons with confiscated torture devices like yoke spikes and spiked bits. Enthusiastic students smile, cheer, and sign the “kindness pledge,” and district officials request return visits. The Compassionate Citizen program makes a tangible difference: Young people who have completed the class have stopped eating animals, rescued wildlife from danger, educated their families about proper animal husbandry, and phoned Animal Rahat for emergency assistance. This month, 274 children and 16 teachers completed the workshop to rave reviews.
