Animal Rahat founder Ingrid Newkirk recently travelled to India, discovering someone in need of help:
On one of my recent trips to India, some of the team and I had just left the Ranapur sanctuary and were headed to Sangli when something caught my eye: a chicken transport truck was barreling down the highway with a lone hen inside. We convinced the driver to pull over and persuaded him to let us keep the little bird, who had been left behind when her flock mates were unloaded for slaughter. She was scared and likely missing the only friends she ever knew, but as soon as we reached the sanctuary and she spotted the flock of rescued chickens, her spirits brightened. After a checkup, we began the introductions. Janaki, as she’s now known, made friends instantly and is enjoying her newfound freedom and her regular “hen fests.”
